Does Instagram Work in China? (2026)

Not on a normal Chinese network — Instagram is blocked by the Great Firewall, along with Facebook, Messenger and Threads. But you can still post and scroll in China; it depends on how your phone gets online.

Instagram (owned by Meta) sits behind the Great Firewall, the same system that blocks Google, WhatsApp and YouTube. On a local Chinese SIM or hotel Wi-Fi, the feed won't load and uploads fail.

How to use Instagram in China (no VPN)

The firewall only filters China's domestic internet. Get your phone onto a foreign network and Instagram works normally:

The honest trade-offs

We'd rather you know this up front than be surprised on your trip.

Posting photos and Reels over a roaming connection is data-heavy and slower than home Wi-Fi. Upload big content on hotel Wi-Fi where you can.
If Instagram logs you out, receiving the SMS or two-factor code in China can be a pain. Stay logged in before you travel.
