This surprises people: Hong Kong sits right next to the Great Firewall but isn’t behind it. Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail and YouTube all work normally on a Hong Kong connection. So the eSIM is straightforward, it just gives you fast local data and everything you already use keeps working. The catch comes if you cross the border into Shenzhen, and we’ll get to that.
Get online before you leave the airport
Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi before you fly. It only starts its clock when you actually connect in Hong Kong, so set it up early and walk off the plane at HKG already online. You can buy your Airport Express ticket, call a taxi, or pull up directions to your hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui or Central without hunting for a SIM kiosk first.
The stuff locals actually use
- WhatsApp is the default. Not WeChat, not LINE. If you’re messaging a tour, a landlord or a new friend, they’ll almost certainly be on WhatsApp.
- Octopus card (八達通). One tap for the MTR, buses, trams, the Star Ferry, and paying at 7-Eleven and most shops. Grab a physical card or add Octopus to your phone’s wallet.
- Google Maps and Citymapper both work well here. Citymapper Hong Kong is unusually good for door-to-door transit.
- Data for the little things. Checking ferry times to Lamma or Cheung Chau, translating a dai pai dong menu, splitting a bill. This is where always-on data quietly earns its keep.
