Does WhatsApp work in China?

Short answer: not on a normal Chinese network — WhatsApp messages and calls are blocked by the Great Firewall. But you can absolutely keep using it in China. The trick is how your phone connects to the internet.

Why WhatsApp is blocked in China

WhatsApp (owned by Meta) sits behind the Great Firewall, the same system that blocks Google, Gmail, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. On a local Chinese SIM card or hotel Wi-Fi, WhatsApp simply won't connect — messages hang and calls fail. This has been the case since China restricted WhatsApp in 2017.

How to use WhatsApp in China (two ways)

The firewall only filters traffic on China's domestic internet. If your phone rides a foreign network instead, your data exits through another country and WhatsApp works normally. There are two ways to do that:

  • A foreign travel eSIM (easiest, no VPN). A China travel eSIM roams onto a local network for signal but routes your data internationally, so WhatsApp, Google and Maps all work the moment you land — nothing to configure.
  • A VPN on a local Chinese SIM. If you buy a cheap local SIM, that data is behind the firewall, so you'll need a working VPN on top. Install and test it before you fly, because VPN websites are blocked once you're in China.

Set it up before you fly

This is the mistake that catches most first-timers: they wait until they land, then find the App Store, VPN sites and even Gmail login are blocked. Whatever you choose — eSIM, VPN, or just making sure WhatsApp is logged in — set it up at home on reliable Wi-Fi first. A travel eSIM installs in about a minute and only starts its clock when you connect in China, so there's no downside to doing it early.

What else is blocked?

WhatsApp is far from the only one. Google, Gmail, Maps, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube are all blocked too. See the full list and the fix for each in our guide to apps blocked in China, or read whether you actually need a VPN in China.

The honest trade-offs

We'd rather you know this up front than be surprised on your trip.

  • WhatsApp voice and video calls are more fragile than text. Even on a roaming eSIM, calls can drop on congested networks — expect to fall back to messages sometimes.
  • If WhatsApp logs you out, the SMS verification code can be hard to receive in China. Make sure you're already logged in before you fly.
  • Not everyone in China uses WhatsApp — WeChat is the default. Agree on a backup app with your China-based contacts.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp work in China?

Not on a normal Chinese SIM or hotel Wi-Fi — WhatsApp messages and calls are blocked by the Great Firewall. But it works normally if your phone connects through a foreign network: a travel eSIM that roams in China, or your home carrier's roaming, both reach WhatsApp without a VPN. A VPN on a local Chinese SIM also works.

Can I use WhatsApp in China without a VPN?

Yes. A foreign travel eSIM routes your data out through another country, so WhatsApp works without installing any VPN. This is the easiest option for most short trips.

Do WhatsApp calls work in China?

WhatsApp voice and video calls are blocked on local Chinese networks, but they work over a roaming eSIM or a working VPN, just like messages. Call quality depends on your connection.

Why is WhatsApp blocked in China?

WhatsApp (owned by Meta) is blocked by the Great Firewall, along with other Western apps like Google, Instagram and Facebook. China restricted WhatsApp's messaging and calling functions in 2017.

What do people in China use instead of WhatsApp?

WeChat is the standard messaging app in China and works everywhere behind the firewall. If some of your contacts are in China, agreeing on WeChat before your trip is a good backup.
