Is your phone unlocked?
A travel eSIM only works on a carrier-unlocked phone. On iPhone, open Settings → General → About and check “Carrier Lock” — it should say “No SIM restrictions”.

How to check if your phone supports eSIM
iPhone: open Settings > General > About and scroll down. If you see a Digital SIM or an EID number, your iPhone supports eSIM. Every iPhone from the iPhone XS / XR (2018) onward is eSIM-capable, and US iPhone 14 and later are eSIM-only (no physical SIM tray).
Android: open Settings and search for "eSIM" or "Add eSIM" / "Download a SIM". If the option appears, your phone is eSIM-capable. That covers Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and most recent Motorola and OnePlus flagships.
Important exception: iPhones bought in mainland China use a dual physical-SIM tray and do not support eSIM at all. If your iPhone was purchased in China, you will need a different device or a physical SIM.
Don't forget: your phone also has to be unlocked
