Apple makes a China-specific hardware version of the iPhone with two physical nano-SIM slots instead of the eSIM you get elsewhere. It's a regulatory and market decision, and because it's the physical hardware, no software update can add eSIM. This applies across the modern lineup — the China variant of each model ships without eSIM.
How to check your iPhone
Open Settings > General > About and scroll down:
- If you see a Digital SIM or an EID number → your iPhone supports eSIM.
- If you only see physical SIM info and no EID → it's a China-market (dual physical SIM) model, and it can't use a travel eSIM.
