US iPhone 17 has no SIM tray: how to get online in China

Every US iPhone since the iPhone 14 is eSIM-only, including the iPhone 17. There is no SIM tray, so the SIM card sold at a China airport has nowhere to go. The fix is a travel eSIM you install before you leave the US: switch it on when you land and you are online.

1. Check that your iPhone is unlocked

This is the step most people miss. Open Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock:

  • “No SIM restrictions”: any eSIM will work.
  • Anything else: your carrier (T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon…) has locked the phone. Ask them to unlock it well before the trip. See how to check if your iPhone is unlocked.

2. Install a China eSIM while you are still in the US

Buy a China eSIM and you get a QR code. On the iPhone go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM and scan it. Do it on good Wi-Fi at home: the plan only starts counting days when it first connects in China.

3. When you land: turn it on and turn on Data Roaming

In Settings > Cellular, switch the eSIM line on, choose it as your Cellular Data line, and turn on Data Roaming for that eSIM. The phone joins a major Chinese network such as China Unicom by itself. No SIM swap and no manual network settings.

4. Google, WhatsApp and Gmail work with no VPN

Our China eSIM's data is routed outside mainland China, so Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and Gmail open normally, with no VPN. WeChat, Alipay and local maps keep working too. The catch: only on the eSIM's mobile data, not hotel Wi-Fi. Most plans also allow hotspot for a laptop or a travel companion.

5. Keep your US number

The iPhone runs both lines at once: your US number for calls and texts, the eSIM for data. Before you go, turn on Wi-Fi Calling for the US line (Settings > Cellular > your US line > Wi-Fi Calling) so US calls and bank verification texts arrive over the eSIM's data. Turn off Data Roaming on the US line so your US carrier does not charge roaming.

What a travel eSIM does not do

It is data only, so you do not get a Chinese +86 phone number. If you need one for verification codes, plan for that separately.

Quick checklist

  • Carrier Lock says “No SIM restrictions”
  • China eSIM installed in the US
  • In China: eSIM on, set as Cellular Data, Data Roaming on
  • On mobile data, not hotel Wi-Fi, for Google and WhatsApp
  • Wi-Fi Calling on for your US number

Not sure how to set it up? Our store at 82-72 Broadway, Elmhurst, Queens installs it for you before you go: (718) 898-9180.

The honest trade-offs

We'd rather you know this up front than be surprised on your trip.

  • A carrier-locked iPhone cannot use another company's eSIM. Check Carrier Lock first; unlocking is your carrier's decision and can take days.
  • No VPN is needed only on the eSIM's mobile data. Hotel and cafe Wi-Fi in China is filtered like any other connection there.
  • A travel eSIM is data only. There is no Chinese +86 number for verification codes.
  • Install it in the US. Once you are in China, downloading an eSIM can fail when the QR code or the app store is unreachable.

Frequently asked questions

Does the US iPhone 17 have a SIM card slot?

No. Every iPhone sold in the US since the iPhone 14 is eSIM-only, and the iPhone 17 line is the same. There is no tray, so a physical SIM card bought in China cannot be used. The fix is a travel eSIM installed before you leave.

Can I use a China eSIM on a US iPhone?

Yes, if the phone is unlocked. Go to Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. It must say "No SIM restrictions". If it shows anything else, your carrier has locked the phone to its own network and you need to ask them to unlock it, which can take several days, so do it before your trip.

When should I install the eSIM?

Before you fly, while you still have good Wi-Fi in the US: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM, then scan the QR code. The plan does not start counting days until it first connects in China, so installing early wastes nothing.

What do I do when I land in China?

Go to Settings > Cellular, turn the eSIM line on, set it as your Cellular Data line, and turn on Data Roaming for that eSIM. The phone then connects to a major Chinese network such as China Unicom by itself.

Do I need a VPN in China with this eSIM?

No. Our China eSIM data is routed outside mainland China, so Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and Gmail work with no VPN, as long as you are on the eSIM's mobile data. Hotel or cafe Wi-Fi in China is still filtered.

Can I keep my US phone number?

Yes. The iPhone runs two lines at once: your US number for calls and texts, the eSIM for data. Turn on Wi-Fi Calling for the US line before you go and you keep receiving US calls and bank verification texts over the eSIM's data. Turn off Data Roaming on the US line so your US carrier does not bill roaming.

Does the eSIM give me a Chinese +86 phone number?

No. A travel eSIM is data only. If an app or service needs a +86 number for verification codes, you will need to arrange that separately.

Can I share the connection with a laptop?

Most of our plans allow hotspot and tethering. Check the plan details before you buy if you need it.
