Korea: land online, but download Naver first

Korea has some of the fastest mobile networks on the planet, so once you’re online it’s a joy. The catch that surprises everyone is that Google Maps barely works here. Sort that plus your data before you fly and you’re golden.

The internet is open, so no VPN

South Korea has a fully open internet. Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, all of it works normally, and the eSIM just gives you fast local data. No firewall, no VPN. This is nothing like mainland China, which sits behind the Great Firewall.

The thing nobody warns you about: Google Maps is crippled here

Korea restricts exporting its detailed map data, so Google Maps gives you almost no driving directions and patchy walking routes. It’s the single biggest gotcha for first-timers. Download Naver Map or Kakao Map before you go, they’re what locals use and they’re excellent for transit, walking and taxis. Both need a live connection, which is exactly why landing with working data matters so much here.

Get online before you leave Incheon

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. It only starts its days once you connect in Korea, so set it up early and walk out of Incheon already online, ready to grab the AREX train or a taxi into Seoul and pull up Naver for your first destination.

What locals actually use

• KakaoTalk is Korea. Not WhatsApp, not LINE, not WeChat. Messaging, some bookings, even taxis (Kakao T) run through it. Install it before you go.
• Naver Map / Kakao Map for getting around, as covered above. Trust us on this one.
• T-money card for the subway, buses and taxis. Buy it at any convenience store; tap and go.
• Papago (Naver’s translator) often handles Korean better than Google Translate, and its camera mode is great for menus.

Coverage is genuinely world-class

How much data do you really need?

Between Naver Map running constantly, translating, and posting, Korea tends to use more data than you’d expect, so we lean toward a larger or unlimited plan here. Lighter, shorter trips can still do fine on a few GB. Top up online in a minute if you run low.
