Open internet, so no games
Japan has a completely open internet. Google Maps, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, LINE, everything works normally. So the eSIM just gives you fast local data and your usual apps keep running. The only thing to get right is setting it up ahead of time.
Land at Narita or Haneda already connected

The apps and cards you’ll actually use
- Mobile Suica or Pasmo. Add the IC card to your phone’s wallet and tap onto trains, subways, buses and konbini. On iPhone you can top it up right from Apple Wallet, which needs data.
- Google Maps is excellent in Japan. Train platforms, transfers, the exact car to board, it’s all there. This will be your most-used app by far.
- LINE. Japan runs heavily on LINE for messaging and even some bookings, so install it before you go.
- Translate. Google Translate’s camera turns a wall of kanji into a menu. Handy at an izakaya or a ticket machine.
Coverage is great, city and country
The eSIM roams onto Japan’s major networks, and their coverage is superb, from the Tokyo subway to the Shinkansen corridor and out to Kyoto, Hakone and the Kansai countryside. Deep mountain trails and a few tunnels will still drop, so grab an offline map for any hiking day.
How much data do you really need?

Do I need a VPN in Japan?
No. Japan has a fully open internet, so Google, LINE, WhatsApp, Instagram and everything else work normally. A VPN would only matter if your trip also includes mainland China.
Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming in Japan?

Should I set up the eSIM before I fly to Japan?
