Install it BEFORE you fly

Why your apps stop working in China
China filters international internet traffic through what's commonly called the Great Firewall. On any local SIM or hotel Wi-Fi, requests to Google, Meta (WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook), YouTube and many Western news sites are blocked or time out.
That's why travelers who land without a plan suddenly can't open Google Maps, sign in to Gmail, or message home on WhatsApp. It isn't your phone — it's the network you're connected to.

Which plan should I pick?
Standard (fixed data) plans are the best value for most trips — maps, messaging, ride-hailing and social use surprisingly little. Unlimited plans suit heavy users who stream, tether a laptop, or just don't want to think about it.
Match the plan length to your trip and add a little buffer. Most plans support hotspot and tethering, so a travel companion or a laptop can usually share the same connection (a few operators may limit it). Need coverage beyond China? A regional or global plan covers multiple countries on one eSIM.
Install before you fly (step by step)
1. Buy your plan and you'll get a QR code by email and in your account. 2. On Wi-Fi at home, open your phone's eSIM/cellular settings and scan the QR to add the line. 3. Leave the line off until you arrive — it stays dormant and doesn't use data.

When you land in China
Turn the eSIM line on, set it as your data line, and enable Data Roaming for it (required to join the partner network — no extra charge). If it doesn't connect within a minute, restart your phone — that clears the handshake and it usually connects right away.
Keep your physical SIM in the phone if you want to receive calls and texts on your home number; just use the eSIM line for data.

Do I need a VPN in China with your eSIM?
No. Our China travel eSIM routes your data outside mainland China, so Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and Gmail work with no VPN installed. There's nothing extra to switch on.
How does it work — what IP does it use?
There's no single fixed IP. Your phone connects to a local Chinese network for signal, but your data is routed internationally through our roaming partner, so it exits on an overseas IP (usually elsewhere in Asia or Europe) and reaches Google, WhatsApp and Gmail directly — no separate VPN. Because it's ordinary international roaming, the exact exit IP is dynamic and varies by network, so we don't promise a specific country or address. It's a data route, not a privacy VPN.
Does WhatsApp work in China with this eSIM?
Yes. WhatsApp calls and messages work normally on our eSIM, because your connection isn't subject to the local block. The same goes for Instagram, Facebook Messenger and Gmail.
Can I use Google and Google Maps in China?
Yes — Google Search, Gmail and Google Maps all work on our eSIM without a VPN. (For in-China driving directions, locals still prefer Amap; either works.)

Will my bank app work?
Everyday apps work great, but because your connection looks foreign, some banking apps or US-only services may flag the location or behave differently. We mention this honestly rather than over-promise.
How much data do I need for a China trip?
For maps, messaging and social, a fixed-data Standard plan is plenty for most travelers. If you stream video or tether a laptop, choose an Unlimited plan.
Can I keep my home phone number for calls and texts?
Yes. Leave your physical SIM in the phone to receive calls/texts on your home number, and use the eSIM line just for data.
