Installing an eSIM downloads a profile from your carrier's activation server — and that one download is unreliable behind the Great Firewall. Connect to Wi-Fi and install manually

If a travel companion's eSIM or international roaming is already online, share their hotspot and install over that connection — it reaches the activation server cleanly.

Try a different Wi-Fi network
Hotel, café and airport-lounge networks vary — some reach the activation server, some don't. If one fails, try another before giving up.

Use a VPN as a last resort
A working VPN can tunnel to the activation server. It's unreliable in China, but worth a try if Wi-Fi alone won't complete the download.

Why eSIM install fails in China
To install an eSIM, your phone contacts your carrier's activation server (SM-DP+) and downloads a profile. That connection has to succeed once. Behind the Great Firewall it's slow or blocked, so the download times out — which is why travelers see "Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change" or a QR that just won't take.
The good news: this is only a hurdle for the one-time install. Once the profile is on your phone, our eSIM routes your data outside mainland China and everything works — Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail — with no VPN.
The iPhone catch (read this first)
Apple documents a hard restriction: an eSIM from a non-China-mainland carrier can't be installed on iPhone while you're physically in mainland China — Wi-Fi and VPN don't change this, because iOS checks your location, not your connection.
So if you're on iPhone in the mainland with nothing installed yet, the reliable options are limited: install it before you cross the border, or while you're in Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan (where the restriction doesn't apply), then travel into the mainland with it already on your phone. Many Android phones are more permissive — the manual method below is worth trying.
Install manually over Wi-Fi (step by step)
1. Connect to Wi-Fi and turn cellular data OFF (so the download uses Wi-Fi). 2. Go to Settings → Cellular/Mobile → Add eSIM → Enter Details Manually. 3. Type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your confirmation email/account (not the QR image). 4. Wait — the profile can take a minute to download. If it fails, restart and repeat.

Why won't my eSIM install in China?

Can I install an eSIM in China without Wi-Fi?
You need some working internet to download the profile — Wi-Fi, a companion's hotspot, or a VPN over another connection. There's no way to install with no connection at all.
Does iPhone let me install a foreign eSIM in China?
No — Apple blocks installing an eSIM from a non-China-mainland carrier while you're physically in mainland China. Install before you cross the border, or while in Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan.
My QR code is in Gmail and I can't open it in China. What now?
Gmail is blocked on local networks, so retrieve your code another way: our eSIM (once installed) or another device with working data can open it, or contact us and we'll resend your SM-DP+ address and activation code. Next time, screenshot it before you travel.
The eSIM installed but there's no signal — how do I fix it?
Turn the eSIM line on, set it as your data line, enable Data Roaming for it (required to join the partner network — no extra charge), and restart the phone. That clears the handshake and it usually connects right away.
Can I use a VPN to install the eSIM in China?
A working VPN can help the download reach the activation server, but VPNs are unreliable in China and it won't bypass the iPhone-in-mainland restriction. Treat it as a last resort, not a plan.
