Vietnam: online before the first motorbike

Everything works here, no VPN. Land connected, book a Grab out of the chaos, and let Maps get you across town in one piece.

Vietnam is one of the best-value trips in Asia, and getting online is part of that. Land with working data and the first hour, crossing a river of motorbikes to your hotel, goes a lot smoother.

The internet works normally

Vietnam has an effectively open internet for travelers: Google Maps, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Gmail all work fine on a normal connection. So the eSIM just hands you fast local data and your usual apps keep running, no VPN needed.

Get online before you leave the airport

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. It only starts its days when you connect in Vietnam, so set it up early and step out of Noi Bai or Tan Son Nhat already online. First thing you’ll want is Grab, because negotiating an airport taxi in a new city with no data is exactly the wrong way to start.

The traffic is a spectacle. Grab and Maps mean you watch it instead of fighting it.

The apps that actually matter

Rice terraces in the mountains of northern Vietnam
Up in Sapa the views take over, but signal reaches further than you’d guess.

Coverage from the cities to the karsts

The eSIM roams onto Vietnam’s major carriers, and coverage is broad and cheap, from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Hoi An, Da Nang, Ha Long Bay and up around Sapa. On a boat in the bay or a remote trek you’ll drop occasionally, so grab an offline map for those days.

How much data do you really need?

Grab, Maps and posting add up, but Vietnam is generous on data value, so a comfortable plan goes a long way. Filming a lot or moving fast between cities? Size up or grab unlimited. Topping up online takes a minute.

Doing more of Asia on this trip?

Vietnam pairs naturally with its neighbors. We’re a China-specialist store, so if the mainland is on your route, remember it’s behind the Great Firewall, and our China eSIM keeps Google and WhatsApp working with no VPN. Several countries in one go? An Asia regional plan can cover them on a single eSIM.

Vietnam eSIM FAQ

Do I need a VPN in Vietnam?

No. For travelers, Vietnam's internet is effectively open, Google, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Gmail all work on a normal connection. A VPN only matters if your trip also includes mainland China.

Should I set up the eSIM before I fly to Vietnam?

Yes. Install it at home on Wi-Fi; it only starts counting its days when you connect in Vietnam, so you land already online and can book a Grab straight away.

What is the best way to get around Vietnam?

Grab, for bikes, cars and food at a fixed up-front price, plus Google Maps. On a Grab bike you get a helmet and skip haggling. Both need mobile data.

Is the coverage good outside the big cities?

Yes. The eSIM roams on Vietnam's major networks with broad coverage from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Hoi An, Da Nang, Ha Long Bay and Sapa. Boats and remote treks may drop, so keep an offline map.

Will my phone work on a Vietnam eSIM?

If it is eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked, yes, which covers iPhone XS and newer, Pixel 3+, Galaxy S20+ and most recent flagships. Mainland-China iPhones have no eSIM. Use our free compatibility checker if unsure.

How much data do I need for Vietnam?

A comfortable plan goes a long way given Vietnam's data value. Filming a lot or moving fast between cities? Size up or go unlimited. You can top up online anytime.
